Boys tennis: Pirates top Niners for sectional title

Updated: November 5, 2013 6:36AM

MERRILLVILLE — Andrean and Merrillville had a Super Bowl moment Thursday night during their Merrillville Sectional final, whoch the Pirates won 3-2.

During the early stages of their match, the tennis court lights went out, reminiscent of last year’s Super Bowl game between San Fransisco and Baltimore.

“It just happens,” said 59ers coach Donn Gobbie. “I believe they’re on a timer here and it’s been a long night. I understand, it’s no big deal.”

And so what does a coach do to keep his team focused during a 20-minute delay?

“It’s not so much keeping them focused as much as keeping them relaxed,” Gobbie said. “We were just joking around and relaxing and taking a breather from the match.”

It was a day of plan Bs.

Because of the wet weather, the semifinal matches had to be played in the school’s fieldhouse. The Pirates, hoping for their fourth sectional title and first since 2002, swept past Lake Station 5-0 with singles wins by Nygel Jackson, Ayron Williams, and Montriel Shell.

Both doubles teams (No. 1 Ronald Mayerski and Sam Dinka and No. 2 Mike Denisiuk and Matt Forsythe)won their matches.

Andrean’s road to the final was a little rougher, edging out River Forest behind No. 1 singles winner Anthony Zaleski. Andrean was hoping for its ninth sectional title.

But, just like the 49ers came up short in last year’s Super Bowl, so did the 59ers last night.
