ARLINGTON, Texas — Notre Dame linebacker Jarrett Grace and wide receiver Daniel Smith suffered injuries in the first half against Arizona State.
A cart came to take Grace of the field for what appeared to be a right leg injury in the second quarter. Grace broke his tibia in his right leg, “Notre Dame on NBC” tweeted.
Grace entered Saturday as Notre Dame’s leader in tackles (37).
Smith left in the first quarter. “Notre Dame on NBC” tweeted it was a possible ankle injury. Smith came in the game with one catch for 9 yards this year.
Councell out for half: Linebacker Ben Councell had to sit out the first half Saturday after he was called for a targeting penalty and ejected in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma. Councell entered Saturday with six tackles this season.
Recruiting bump: Notre Dame hoped to get a recruiting boost during its time in Texas.
“Certainly getting some recruits locally to come to the game, you know, we certainly can’t see them but we can provide tickets, that helps in that respect,” coach Brian Kelly said earlier this week. “A bump would probably be a good word. Is it going to seal the deal for us in a lot of these instances? Probably not, but it certainly helps to have the kind of exposure there.”
Fashion statement: Count nose guard Louis Nix III among those giving the specialty jerseys the team wore Saturday a positive review.
“I like it, I like the change up a little bit,” Nix said. “It’s something new. It might not be traditional, but sometimes tradition gets old to me. I like the new stuff.
“I’m glad they changed it up.”
