Girls soccer: Wheeler to meet Noll in sectional final

VALPARAISO —Wheeler and Bishop Noll will face off for the sectional crown as both advanced in semifinal action Thursday.

In the first game of the evening, Wheeler advanced to the Saturday final with a 3-0 win over Andrean, but it did not come easy.

“We went through the motions early in the game and maybe played off of their momentum in the first half and just were slow to the ball, unlike the way we normally play,” Wheeler coach Bryan Murray said. “But the last 20 minutes was the seventh ranked team in the state that I know and played more like the way we have played all season long.”

Both teams struggled throughout the first half trying to establish their offensive attack, and ended the half in a scoreless tie.

Andrean (8-8) came out the aggressor in the second half and created some looks on goal, but could not convert any of them, due in part to a solid Wheeler defense.

Wheeler (15-1-2) got its offense on track in the last 20 minutes. In the 61st minute Lauren Fratzke fed the ball to Terra Philips who was able to fire it past the keeper for a 1-0 lead.

That seemed to spark the Bearcats as Philips returned the favor to Fratzke, finding her in the box with a solid pass that the sophomore drilled past the Andrean keeper.

Philips wrapped up the scoring in the 79th minute with a breakaway goal to seal the 3-0 win.

“We did not play well in the first half and settled things down. Lauren and I seem to feed off of each other, and were able to connect late in the second half,” Philips said.

In the second game, Bishop Noll controlled the tempo throughout the game as the more dominant offensive team, collecting goals from Julia Kusiak and Megan Whelan for the 2-0 victory and a chance to play for the sectional championship on Saturday.
