Girls basketball: Gina Rubino, Lake Central rout East Chicago

Updated: January 20, 2014 8:32AM

ST. JOHN — Since it happens so frequently, it’s beginning to sound like an old 45 record stuck on play.

Lake Central’s Gina Rubino was at it once again Wednesday night — singing the same old song with her shooting touch.

That’s right.

The Indians’ junior guard was tickling the twine time after time like she seems to have done over and over again already this season.

Rubino buried five 3-point shots and swished 9-of-12 shots overall, scoring a game-high 23 points, while leading the Indians to a 71-37 romp over EC Central.

“We had the inside-outside games working well together tonight,’’ Rubino said. “If they collapsed on Lindsay, and the others inside, they’d kick it outside to us. If they stayed out on us, we went inside.’’

Lindsay Kusbel scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half and snared eight boards for LC (9-1), while Rolanda Curington added nine points and collected six rebounds.

“Our whole idea was to get around Kusbel and deny her the ball, but our kids didn’t do it,’’ EC coach Eric Kundich said. “A lot of it has to do with the fact we’re extremely young and inexperienced.’’

Despite trailing by 39 points (66-27) in the fourth quarter, there was a silver lining for the Cardinals (1-8) as sophomore Cheyenne White posted her fifth double-double with 16 points and 19 rebounds.

The Indians sprinted out to an 18-0 advantage and led 44-19 by halftime.

“We tried to tell the girls that’s what Lake Central likes to do — jump on you and get a big lead,’’ Kundich said. “They have a killer instinct. They like to demoralize you early and get your heads down. They like to get you down and keep you down.’’

With a tough game expected when DAC rival Crown Point visits Friday night, the Indians wanted to stay in tune.

“I thought this was a good game to get us ready for Crown Point,’’ Kusbel said.

“I think it showed we have a lot of maturity as a team and a group to take this game seriously and move forward to our (next game).’’

Kusbel scored eight points in the first quarter, while Curington added seven and Rubino had five.

“I think we have just a really good inside out game,’’ Kusbel added. “I think we all know when we should take the shot or give it up. I think we’re all very unselfish as a group.’’

Rubino scored her 23 points in less than three quarters of playing time.

“She’s a really good shooter, and she’s really shooting the ball with a lot of confidence right now,’’ LC coach Marc Urban said. “This game was good and I like the way we approached it defensively — especially in the second half.’’

Rubino is looking forward to the league matchup with the Bulldogs.

“I think it’s definitely going to be a good game here Friday night,’’ she said. “We have to be ready. We have to come out strong, because they’re going to come out fired-up and wanting to win.’’
