Indiana football coach Kevin Wilson and his staff weren’t just looking for talented players in this year’s recruiting class. Character mattered as well.
“We did a great job of not just recruiting talent, but recruiting our core values,” Wilson said. “We sold the values of what we’re trying to attract and how we want to build our program and work, doing things the right way in the classroom, building leaders, building a football team.
“I think we got a lot of guys that meet the physical needs we want, but I think they fit the needs of what we’re looking for and the kind of kid we want to play ball for us at IU.”
Still, after a 1-11 season last fall, talent was a factor in the recruiting process as well.
Of the 25 players who signed national letters of intent with the Hoosiers on Wednesday, 10 are linemen — six on defense, four on offense.
The Hoosiers allowed a Big Ten-worst 243.7 yards per game on the ground last season, and were 10th in the conference with 18 sacks.
So while Wilson noted that none of the incoming players were promised the chance to start immediately, his short track record as coach — 32 true and redshirt freshmen saw playing time for the Hoosiers last season — indicates that the opportunity is there for the newcomers.
And some of them are wasting no time. Six of the seven junior college players Indiana signed on Wednesday have already enrolled and will be eligible for spring practice.
Five of the six are defensive players, but it’s the one offensive player — quarterback Cameron Coffman — who could have the quickest impact.
With the departures of Dusty Kiel and Edward Wright-Baker, incumbent starter Tre Roberson was faced with little competition for the starting job. But Coffman, a 6-2, 191-pounder who led Arizona Western to the NJCAA title game last fall, and Nathan Sudfeld, a 6-5, 215-pounder from Modesto, Calif., should push Roberson, who was thrown into the mix as a true freshman himself last season.
Perhaps no newcomer personifies Wilson’s quest for talent and character like Sudfeld, a 2,300-yard passer last fall who took a mission trip to Uganda when he was 14.
“I think the work ethic, the intelligence, the family backgrounds and coming from a lot of great winning programs, there are a lot of things about these kids that I think collectively make it a pretty decent class for us,” Wilson said.
Purdue signs 23: Purdue announced a 23-player signing class on Wednesday.
The Boilermakers signed 13 offensive players, including three quarterbacks and six offensive linemen. They’ll join two early enrollees in coach Danny Hope’s fourth recruiting class.
Quarterback Bilal Marshall of Miami will join the Boilermakers along with quarterbacks Aloyis Gray of Pike High School in Indianapolis and Austin Appleby of North Canton, Ohio.
