Valparaiso women host Purdue Cal

Updated: December 15, 2012 6:33AM

PURDUE CALUMET (1-2) AT VALPO (1-0)

When: 7:05 p.m., today

Radio: 95.1-FM

Skinny: The Crusaders close out a two-game homestand to start the season against NAIA Division II Purdue Calumet. VU won its first opener in three seasons and should be the overwhelming favorite in this contest. Horizon League Player of the Week Shaquira Scott scored a team-high 17 points in the win over Indiana on Friday. Scott, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against Ball State last season, looked better than ever slashing to the basket and taking shots against IU.

This is the 10th meeting between the two schools and Purdue Cal leads the series, 5-4. The teams haven’t met since Dec. 9, 1999, a 98-49 Crusaders win. Former Lake Central girls basketball coach Tom Megyesi is in sixth season as the head coach of the Peregrines and has transformed the women’s basketball program with his high-octane offensive attack. Purdue Cal has led its conference in scoring the last four years, averaging almost 75 points a contest.
