Griner too much for Irish

SOUTH BEND — Brittney Griner had 24 points and 14 rebounds, three other Baylor players scored in double figures and the third-ranked Lady Bears beat No. 5 Notre Dame 73-61 Wednesday night in a repeat of last season’s national championship game.
The Fighting Irish could do little to slow Griner as the Lady Bears (7-1), who have all five starters back from the team that went 40-0 last season, used a 10-0 run late in the second half to pull away.
The Irish (5-1), with just two starters back, were simply no match, especially with All-America senior Skylar Diggins struggling on 4-of-19 shooting — with rapper Lil Wayne sitting courtside to cheer her.
Freshman Jewell Loyd led Notre Dame with a season-high 24 points and Kayla McBride added 16.
Men
Butler 87, IUPUI 55: At Indianapolis, Rotnei Clarke and Kellen Dunham scored 17 points apiece, and Butler took control early in a victory over crosstown rival IUPUI on Wednesday night.
Clarke hit four 3-pointers and Dunham had three for the Bulldogs (6-2), who never trailed, opened the game on a 35-8 run and led by as many as 37 in the second half. Andrew Smith added 11 points, Erik Fromm and Khyle Marshall had 10 apiece, and every player on Butler’s roster saw at least 4 minutes of action.
Ball St. 76, Holy Cross 57: At Muncie, Majok Majok had 18 points and 17 rebounds Wednesday night to help Ball State beat Holy Cross of Indiana. Ball State never trailed and led 36-22 at halftime.
