Women’s basketball: VU women’s preview cap

women’s
basketball

VALPARAISO
(6-9, 1-1)
AT UIC (5-10, 1-1)

When: 3 p.m., today.

Radio: 95.1-FM

Skinny: The Crusaders are looking to get back on track after losing a tough game at home to Loyola on Wednesday night. Valpo cut a 12-point second-half deficit down to one-point on three different occasions but turnovers (25 total) wound up being the difference as a key steal and fast-break basket by Taylor Johnson put the Ramblers ahead for good.

Junior forward Tabitha Gerardot led the way for Valpo with 17 points — 14 of them in the second half — and 14 rebounds. Shaquira Scott added seven points and six rebounds and Gina Lange tallied six points and nine rebounds.

If Valpo hopes to win this road contest, it will need to stop Terri Bender, Rachel Story and Taylor Foulks. All three of them had big games in the Flames win over Loyola with Bender and Story recording 20 points and Foulks chipping in 14. Story is the sixth leading scorer in the Horizon League averaging 15.2 points per game, while Katie Hannemann is averaging 12 points and 7.1 rebounds a contest.
