CLEVELAND St. (10-9, 2-4) AT Valpo (7-12, 2-4)
When: 1:35 p.m. Saturday
The Skinny: The Crusaders were 21.2 seconds away from victory Thursday after sophomore Shaquira Scott’s layup put the team ahead 66-65. But Wright State’s Kim Demmings came right back down and scored with 6.3 seconds left to give the Raiders the victory and drop VU to 2-4 in Horizon League play. The Crusaders are hoping to bounce back in conference action Saturday afternoon as they bring in a 5-3 home record.
Cleveland State, which is coming off a 96-77 loss at Detroit, is 9-13 overall against the Crusaders after splitting two contests last year. CSU won 49-45 at the ARC last season but dropped a 66-48 game at the Wolstein Center. Stopping Cori Coleman and Kiersten Green will be the key to victory for VU. Coleman, who scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss to Detroit, is averaging 12.7 ppg, while Green is averaging 10.3 ppg. Shalonda Winton is the team’s leading scorer with 21.7 ppg and will likely get her double digits, so slowing down her teammates could be more important than focusing entirely on Winton.
Tabitha Gerardot is the Crusaders’ go-to player after recording her sixth double-double of the season. Gerardot had 18 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Wright State as she continues to make her presence felt in the middle. Charae Richardson added 17 points in the loss, while Gina Lange had a team-high 11 rebounds.
