Behind a number of escape acts by the pitching staff, Valparaiso held on to beat Youngstown State 3-2 Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
On a day where Valpo honored nine seniors, Kyle Wormington earned a six-out save — his first as a Crusader — and Tanner Vavra squeezed home the game-winning run.
“We’re excited to finish second. I thought the seniors did a nice job for us today,” head coach Tracy Woodson said.
With UIC (24-26, 13-11 Horizon) defeating Wright State Saturday, the Flames clinched the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Conference Tournament next week in Niles, Ohio.
Valparaiso (28-26, 13-11 Horizon) and UIC will face off Thursday in a rematch of last season’s Horizon League Championship game. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Eastwood Field.
Valpo golf finishes 13th in NCAAs: The Valparaiso men’s golf team posted a team score of 310 in Saturday’s final round of the NCAA Columbus Regional at The Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio. The Crusaders finished its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 13th place with a three-day total of 927. No. 5 New Mexico on the overall championship.
“The tournament was a tremendous experience, and the team gave it their best,” VU coach David Gring said. “While the results were not what we planned for, we learned a lot and were grateful for the opportunity to compete.”
Senior Austin Gaugert led the Crusaders with a 3-over 74 to finish tied for 48th at 226.
