Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey spent five seasons as the coach at Delaware.
He’ll get to see the Blue Hens again in the Gotham Classic.
Three Notre Dame home games were announced as part of the event on Tuesday. The Irish will face Delaware (Dec. 7), Bryant (Dec. 9) and North Dakota State (Dec. 11) at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.
Notre Dame meets Ohio State on Dec. 21 at Madison Square Garden in New York in the event’s showcase game, which was previously announced. That contest will be on ESPN2.
According to Delaware’s website, this will be the first meeting between the Irish and the Blue Hens. Brey coached at Delaware from 1995-2000. He had a 99-52 record at the school and helped the team reach the NCAA Tournament in 1998 and 1999. Delaware went 19-14 last season.
Notre Dame is 1-0 all-time against Bryant. The Irish defeated the Bulldogs 84-59 in 2011. Bryant had a 19-12 record last season.
Notre Dame will meet North Dakota State for the first time. Five starters return for the Bison off a team that went 24-10 and reached the championship game of the Summit League tournament.
Notre Dame has a 5-7 record in the all-time series against Ohio State. This will be the first meeting between the teams since 2008.
The Buckeyes are one of three Big Ten teams on Notre Dame’s schedule this season. Notre Dame is at Iowa on Dec. 3 for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. It’s the first trip to Iowa City for the Irish since 1950. The team also faces Indiana as part of the Crossroads Classic on Dec. 14 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Notre Dame learned its opponent pairings for its first ACC season in late April. Notre Dame has home and road games against North Carolina, Boston College, Georgia Tech and Virginia. Clemson, Duke, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech are the five home-only games. Florida State, Maryland, Miami, Syracuse and Wake Forest are the five away-only foes. Dates for those games will be announced later.
Report: Phelps is cancer free: Former Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps is cancer free, he told WSBT-TV in an interview Tuesday.
“Yesterday I found out that I’m finally cancer free from the bladder cancer,” Phelps said in an interview with WSBT posted on the station’s website.
Phelps has been a basketball analyst for ESPN. The network announced in late April that Phelps had been diagnosed with bladder cancer. Phelps, 71, coached at Notre Dame for 20 seasons. He had a 393-197 record with the Irish.
“After beating prostate cancer because of early detection and now bladder cancer, hopefully I can lie low for a while and just live a healthy life,” Phelps told WSBT.
