SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame linebacker Danny Spond will no longer play football because of undisclosed medical reasons, coach Brian Kelly announced Saturday.

“What was pretty apparent was that it was an emotional decision. It didn’t come without a lot of thought,” Kelly said. “He spent the day speaking to a lot of specialist and his family was here. This was not a decision that came easy. He loves his teammates. But I think what’s most important is he did what’s in his best interest for his future.”

Kelly said Spond and his family will release a statement relative to the reasons some time next week.

Spond was diagnosed with a severe migraine last year. He missed the first two games of the season, but started the final 11 contest. Spond finished with 39 tackles, one tackle for loss and one interception.
