Momentum builder

A pair of teams hopes a victory in the last Northwest Indiana tourney before this weekend’s sectionals builds some momentum.

The Portage girls winning Saturday’s NWI Region Rumble wasn’t much of a surprise. The Indians only lost one dual match all season, and contended in every tournament. But the Crown Point boys made a statement by defeating Portage 368-306 in the final.

Portage’s girls survived a high-scoring final with Lake Central, winning 415-405.

The top boys individual two-game series came from Ricky Gutierrez of Morton with 504, while Trinity King of LaPorte led girls with 449.
