Girls basketball: Bowman tops Hobart in double overtime

Updated: February 29, 2012 8:09AM

GARY — There’s no doubt senior Princess German is the face of the Bowman program. Coaches and fans have been praising her talents since the seventh grade.

But fellow senior RaShawnda Dunlap brings a little something to the table, too.

And this dynamic duo was key to the Eagles’ thrilling 81-78 double-overtime victory over Hobart on Senior Night.

German and Dunlap combined for 71 points, 17 rebounds, 16 steals and eight assists in a game that once featured Bowman leading by 20 points — and another time trailing by six points in double overtime.

“I’m so happy (German) was (able) to close it out on a positive this season,” Bowman coach Janora Holmes said. “Princess has been one of the biggest contributors for this athletic program since seventh grade. It’s bittersweet but I’m so happy for her.

“As for (Dunlap), at the beginning of the season, we asked ‘Who was that silent horse?’ We tried to bring her out last season and she’s starting to realize her potential and it’s starting to show. She and Princess and Diamond (Delk) are the core of this team and without them we wouldn’t be where we are.”

It was the Eagles’ (15-6) eighth win in nine games to close out the regular season. Free throws killed Bowman down the stretch, however. Bowman shot 12-of-30 for the game. If they plan to win a second straight sectional championship, the Eagles will have to clean that up.

Hobart (10-10) was led by Morgan Flaherty, who finished with a team-high 30 points and seven rebounds. She knocked down two field goals in the first two minutes of the second overtime as the Brickies took what looked like an insurmountable 74-68 lead. But lack of depth hurt Hobart down the stretch as three key members fouled out.
