Chesterton take reigns from Munster
The sign on the wall of Munster’s year-old natatorium listing the pool records will need a major overhaul after last week.
First, Chesterton came in on Thursday and set seven pool records in its dual win over the Seahorses. Then at Saturday’s Northwest Crossroads Conference meet, Highland teammates Stephen Castillo and Adam Johnston broke two more pool standards.
Castillo won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 43.91 seconds and Johnston lowered his own record in the 50 free by going 21.13.

Merrillville keeps improving
With every meet, the Pirates’ scores climb a little higher. The squad began the season posting scores in the low 100s, but during two meets last week, Merrillville twice eclipsed the 106-point mark.
On Thursday, Merrillville avenged losses the previous two seasons with a 106.125-101.55 win over LaPorte. Three different gymnasts won individual events for Merrillville: Taylor Woods on vault (9.125), Kristina Goodman on bars (8.9) and Amy Aponte on beam (9.325).
“For the last two years, LaPorte won those dual meets,” said Merrillville head coach Diane Roberts, who called Thursday’s meet her team’s “best performance so far.”
While hosting Saturday’s 14-team Merrillville Invitational, the Pirates team scored a 106.55 overall, finishing second to Portage.
“Our goal is to continue to increase our team score so that when it’s most important, we can compete in our sectional against teams like Portage and Valparaiso,” said Roberts.
