VALPARAISO — Julie Hogg led the way for Boone Grove on senior night, scoring 15 points, including eight in the third quarter as the Wolves took control on the way to a 54-38 girls basketball victory over visiting North Judson on Thursday.
Hogg, a 6-foot senior, was 5-for-5 from the field, 3-for-3 from the line, and had seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals, setting the tone on both ends of the floor for 18-2 Boone Grove.
“Julie had a solid game,” Wolves coach Candy Wilson said. “We knew we had an advantage in the post.”
Another senior, Emily Bobrowski, had 10 points, all in the first half, for Boone Grove. Classmates Brittany Shaffer, Anna Cantwell and Kayla Mastey joined the duo in the starting lineup. They wore bright pink warmup jerseys to mark the occasion.
Wilson said she wasn’t sure if the five seniors would be pressing on their special evening.
“It’s senior night,” she said. “It’s always emotional.”
Hogg scored six points in the first four minutes of the third quarter to give the hosts a 32-21 lead. A 3-pointer from Brittany Slicker made it 42-30 with 3:30 left in the game.
North Judson (13-7) wasn’t about to go away, though. Danna Timm hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 42-35 with two minutes remaining. Another 3-pointer, by Lexi Messer, brought the Bluejays to within 44-38, but the Wolves made six straight free throws to put the game out of reach.
Timm had 17 points, including five 3-pointers in 11 attempts, to lead North Judson.
Six-foot sophomore Nicole Malouhos was a key contributor off the bench for Boone Grove, scoring six points in the second half and providing a defensive presence on the perimeter with her long reach.
Bobrowski helped Boone Grove stay ahead early with two second-quarter 3-pointers that blunted a North Judson rally. The Bluejays, after trailing early 13-5, got within 15-14 before five straight Bobrowski points aided in restoring Boone Grove to a 22-17 halftime advantage.
Both Boone Grove, a Porter County Conference school, and North Judson, an independent, compete in the Class 2A North Judson Sectional, although they are on opposite sides of the bracket.
