Small school makes big splash in KV Invite

Calumet Christian made a huge statement winning the Kankakee Valley Invitational on Saturday afternoon claiming all four matches, including the championship against the host Kougars, 25-15, 21-25, 15-6.

Sophomore Ally Roh led the way for the Patriots with 48 kills for the day; setter Cassie Obinger recorded a team-high 40 assists and Kaylie Obinger added 39 digs. Calumet Christian, which has an enrollment of just more than 100 students and is not IHSAA-sanctioned program, is 13-2 this season.

The Kougars, who finished 3-1 on the day, defeated Merrillville 25-19, 25-14, Morton 25-16, 25-6 and North Judson 22-25, 25-16, 15-5. Junior Gabby Martin led KV with 27 kills, 25 digs and seven aces, while Lauren Stokes finished with 90 assists, 15 digs and six aces.

North Judson, which won its pool play with wins over Winamac (25-16, 25-13) and Griffith (27-25, 25-17), finished third overall losing to Calumet Christian and KV in the championship bracket.

Player of the Week

Alyssa Kvarta, Crown Point

The sophomore came up big in a five-game win over Lake Central on Tuesday. She finished with seven kills, 13 assists, eight digs and four aces. Kvarta tallied 16 kills and seven aces in a four-game loss to Chesterton on Thursday.
