LaPorte — Hanover Central won the first ever sectional at Beechwood golf course with a score of 408. Glenn High School and New Prairie High School tied with 422 each to advance to the regional held in Lafayette and LaPorte missed the cut by only two strokes.
Hanover Central had a 90-minute drive to get to Beechwood, but according to coach Jerry Kienzle, the commute was not a problem on Friday.
“The girls were excited to play today,” Kienzle said. “After the front nine the team was a bit discouraged with their scores but really rebounded well on the back, and made us feel confident while waiting for the other teams’ scores.”
Jamie Frost of Hanover Central scored a team-low 97 on the day to help push Hanover Central into the lead.
“I haven’t had a sure-fire No. 1 all year, my three seniors have picked each other up all year and it continued today,” Kienzle said.
The three individuals who advance to the regional are Delanie Alcorn from LaPorte with a 97, Lauren Bailey from LaCrosse with a score of 102, and LaPorte’s Katie Gurnicz with a 103.
LaPorte coach Mark Wilson was very pleased with having Alcorn and Gurnicz advance, but as a whole the Slicers did not excel on their home turf.
“We felt a lot of pressure playing on our home course and in golf or any other sport when your nerves get the best of you, you don’t always play your best,” Wilson said.
“It was kind of a perfect storm start for us,” Wilson said. “We put ourselves in a big hole after the front nine and were just unable to pull ourselves out of it.”
The sectional had its drama, with a one-hole playoff between Frost and Alcorn, in which Alcorn came out on top to finish with the best score of the day.
