Girls Volleyball Sectional Outlook

Updated: November 16, 2012 6:22AM

Lowell

Schedule: Tuesday: Lowell vs. West Side, 6 p.m.; Thursday: Morton vs. East Chicago, 6 p.m., Lake Central vs. Highland, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday: Munster vs. Lowell-West Side winner, 10 a.m., Morton-EC winner vs. LC-Highland winner, 11:30 a.m., final, 4 p.m.

Skinny: Munster is the four-time defending champion and finished undefeated in the Northwest Crossroads Conference. Lake Central will likely give Munster the most fits, having beaten the Mustangs earlier in the season; LC also gave LaPorte its only DAC loss of the season.

Next: Winner vs. LaPorte Sectional winner in regional championship, Oct. 23.

Valparaiso

Schedule: Tuesday: Merrillville vs. Michigan City, 5:30 p.m., Hobart vs. Portage, 7 p.m.; Thursday: Valparaiso vs. LaPorte, 5:30 p.m., Crown Point vs. Chesterton, 7 p.m.; Saturday: Merrillville-MC winner vs. Hobart-Portage winner, 11 a.m., Valpo-LaPorte winner vs. CP-Chesterton winner, 12:30 p.m., final, 7 p.m.

Skinny: LaPorte has owned this sectional, winning six out of the last seven titles. Valparaiso put an end to that streak when it swept the Slicers in three games last season. This time, the two favorites will meet in the first round, while Hobart looks like the favorite to come out of the other bracket. Chesterton is the darkhorse with wins over LC and Valparaiso in DAC action.

Next: Winner vs. Lowell Sectional winner in the regional championship, Oct. 23.

Griffith

Schedule: Thursday: Gavit vs. Clark, 6 p.m., Lew Wallace vs. Griffith, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday: Gavit-Clark winner vs. Lew Wallace-Griffith winner, 11 a.m, Hammond vs. Roosevelt, 12:30 p.m., final, 7 p.m..

Skinny: Gavit is looking to win back the sectional crown, having won the title in 2010. Griffith is the defending champion but lost twice to the Gladiators in the regular season. The Gladiators won 20 matches for the first time in 10 years and should have no problem walking through this sectional.

Next: Winner vs. Knox Sectional winner in the regional championship, Oct. 23.

Knox

Schedule: Thursday: Kankakee Valley vs. Andrean, 6 p.m., Rensselaer vs. Knox, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday: KV-Andrean winner vs. Rensselaer-Knox winner, 11 a.m., Calumet vs. Hanover Central, 12:30 p.m., final, 7 p.m.

Skinny: The 59ers and Kougars split their NCC matches this season so whichever team comes out ready to go should be the favorite the rest of the way. Andrean is the defending sectional champion and won a big match against Wheeler at the end of the season for some momentum down the stretch. Gabby Martin, however, is hoping to change things and bring the sectional title back to Wheatfield.

Next: Winner vs. Griffith Sectional winner in regional championship, Oct. 23.

River Forest

Schedule: Thursday: Wheeler vs. Lake Station, 6 p.m., Bishop Noll vs. Bowman Academy, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday: Wheeler-Lake Station winner vs. Noll-Bowman winner, 11 a.m., River Forest vs.Whiting, 12:30 p.m., finals, 7 p.m.

Skinny: Four-time defending champion Wheeler is a heavy favorite heading into sectionals. Whiting’s bye to the championship should give the Oilers hope, however, as they played strong down the stretch and have the talent to challenge the Bearcats for the title. Wheeler’s Shannon Doyle and Haley Plothow are the top two players in the sectional and are hungry for a another semistate trip. Whiting is hoping to earn its second title in school history (won sectional in Class 1A in ’07).

Next: Winner vs. North Judson Sectional winner in regional championship, Oct. 23.

North Judson

Schedule: Thursday: Boone Grove vs. North Judson, 5 p.m., Rochester vs. Winamac, 6:30 p.m.; Saturday: Boone Grove-North Judson winner vs. Rochester-Winamac winner, 11 a.m., Hebron vs. North Newton, 12:30 p.m., final, 4 p.m.

Skinny: North Judson knocked off three-time defending sectional champion Winamac last season but dropped a battle against Rochester in the final last year. Rochester earned the title with a 25-18, 25-15, 17-25, 25-15 win over the Bluejays. Several teams are capable of winning the title but the favorites should be Rochester or Boone Grove.

Next: Winner vs. River Forest Sectional winner in regional championship, Oct. 23.

Washington Twp.

Schedule: Thursday: LaCrosse vs. Covenant Christian, 6 p.m., 21st Century Charter vs. Kouts, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday: LaCrosse-Covenant Christian winner vs. 21st Century-Kouts winner, 10 a.m., Washington Twp. vs. Morgan Twp., 11:30 a.m., final, 6 p.m.

Skinny: The Senators sent out coach Scott Campbell in style, not only winning their fourth straight sectional title but the school’s first regional crown, last year. Washington Twp. is just as dangerous this season. Drawing the bye and playing at home makes the Senators the favorite to win the crown.

Next: Winner vs. Pioneer Sectional winner in regional championship, Oct. 23.

Culver Community

Schedule: Tuesday: Triton vs. South Central, 6:30 p.m.; Thursday: Marquette vs. Culver Community, 6:30 p.m., Oregon-Davis vs. Westville, 8 p.m.; Saturday: Argos vs. Triton-South Central winner, 10:30 a.m., Marquette-Culver winner vs. Oregon-Davis-Westville winner, noon, final, 6:30 p.m.

Skinny: Culver knocked off defending sectional champion South Central, 20-25, 25-13, 25-16, 16-25, 15-13 in a thrilling sectional championship last season.

Next: Winner vs. Fort Wayne Blackhawk winner in regional championship, Oct. 23.
