KNOX — Andrean and Knox will meet in the semifinals of the Class 3A Knox Sectional on Satuday morning, after Andrean defeated Kankakee Valley in a 3-2 thriller and Knox had no problem with Rensselaer, 3-0. The Knox-Andrean match starts at 11am, with Hanover Central-Calumet to follow.
“It was night and day in intensity in the two matches tonight,” Knox coach Jake Skelly said.
And the sectional opener between Andrean and Kankakee Valley was the match of the night, with the two long-time rivals going the full distance. Andrean edged the Kougars 25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 24, 26, then came back to win the final game 15-9.
The difference-maker all night may have been Andrean’s Grace Cooper. The 59ers junior was outstanding, delivering points on service and setting up her frontline time after time.
“Cooper is a believer,” said Andrean coach Julie Wiejak, who felt her team was “playing soft” going into the decisive fifth game. “I told them you have to play your best game. There is a ton of pressure, you’ve got to believe, got to do your best job.”
Wiejak said Cooper suggested that she move Marija Nicksic closer to the net, where she could block. It worked.
“Cooper was saying, Nicksic would get it done,” Wiejak said.
Not only that, but “Grace got four points right where it means the most.”
Andrean is now 22-7, while KV finishes at 22-11.
The Redskins made short work of the Bombers, upping their record to 23-10, with a 25-9, 25-14, 25-15 sweep.
“It wasn’t a very competitive game,” said Redskin frontliner Caitlyn Zachary, who finished with 12 kills and 3 aces.Nikki Frasure had 12 assists and Madison Whiles 12 digs.
The Bombers finished 7-22.
