Football: Calumet gets first victory of the season

James Adams ran for three touchdowns, and Kobe Fowler ran for two more as Calumet beat Gavit 30-24, picking up its first win of the season at the most opportune time. The first-round win in Class 3A Sectional 17 sets up a semifinal next week at home against South Bend St. Joseph’s, which beat Knox 42-8.
The Warriors jumped out to a 24-0 lead at halftime, as Fowler had scoring runs of 23 and 32 yards. Gavit made a game of it by scoring 18 third-quarter points to get within a score, but Adams iced the win with his third touchdown of the game.
Fort Wayne Carroll 49, LaPorte 7: The Slicers were held to just two first downs and no third-down conversions all game as Carroll rolled to a first-round victory in Class 5A Sectional 2.
Charles Salary ran for 98 yards and LaPorte’s lone touchdown on 21 carries. But the Slicers mustered just one passing yard on three completions, and punted eight times.
Carroll outgained LaPorte 339-98.
Around the region: Bishop Noll trounced South Newton 35-6. The Warriors will visit Winamac in net week’s Class 1A Sectional 33 semifinal.
Morton throttled Clark 54-22, and will play at East Chicago in next week’s Class 4A Sectional 9 semifinal.
North Judson defeated Manchester 26-6. The Bluejays advance to face Rochester at home next week in the semifinals of Class 2A Sectional 26.
Mishawaka Marian defeated Lew Wallace 42-9 in Class 3A Sectional 17.
