LAKE STATION — A fourth consecutive sectional title was an early goal set by Wheeler and it became a reality as the Bearcats dominated Whiting for an impressive 3-0 win (25-18, 25-17, 25-19).
Wheeler defeated Bishop Noll in the morning and Whiting rolled past River Forest — both matches were three-game sweeps — to set up the meeting in the final.
“It’s a relief to have won playing against great teams like Bishop Noll and Whiting, but our girls came out and played well and I am extremely proud of the entire team. They all contributed throughout the sectional tourney,” said Wheeler coach Alisha Polite.
Wheeler controlled all three games in a victory that was special to the entire team, but a little more special to senior Shannon Doyle.
She’s contributed to four straight sectional crowns, but attributes this one to a solid team performance from a team of “best friends.”
“I’ve been fortunate to have now been a part of winning four consecutive titles, but this win is special because it means so much to win with such a close knit group of teammates,” she said.
Doyle led the charge which was an all-around effort. Her solid hitting was contagious and her leadership, along with Haley Plothow, rubbed off on the rest of the team.
Underclassmen also made an impact on Saturday as sophomore Stephanie Beck and freshman Belle Bravo played pivotal roles in the Bearcats victory.
“I was nervous tonight, but knew how important is was to come out and play well,” Bravo said. “It’s a great feeling to have accomplished this.”
Wheeler (31-5) advances to Tuesday’s regional at Rochester, which won the North Judson sectional.
