Girls basketball: DAC outlook

Updated: October 16, 2013 11:55PM

Chesterton

Coach: Jack Campbell

Coach’s record at school: 302-215

Coach’s career record: 302-215

2011-12 finish: 10-11, 5-9 DAC

Key losses: Lindsay Gorman (16 ppg), Annette Frank (4 rpg)

Key returnees: Caroline Puntillo (9 ppg), Jocelyn Lipscomb (7 ppg), Kassidy Scott (3 ppg), Kelsey Conway, Hannah McCafferty, Kelly Braun

Outlook: The Trojans are still a fairly young team. But they’re a young team with a good amount of experience. Gorman and Frank were certainly key losses from a team that had its ups and downs last season, but Campbell returns a solid group, led by Puntillo and Lipscomb. And both of those players are still only juniors. Chesterton only has three seniors on its roster, so the best may be yet to come.

Portage

Coach: Chris Seibert

Coach’s record at school: 25-42

Coach’s career record: 25-42

2011-12 finish: 5-18, 2-12 DAC

Key losses: None

Key returnees: Nicki Monahan (15.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg), Alexis Johnson, Kaitlin Doud

Outlook: Portage’s offense will again be led by Monahan, who is on pace to break the program’s all-time scoring record. But coach Chris Seibert said the key to this year’s team will be finding some secondary scoring. A wealth of experience should help that. “We’ve been young for three years in a row with this group of juniors and seniors,” Seibert said. “They have a lot of varsity experience, we just need to get off to a good start.” Expect incoming freshman Kaitlyn Steers to contribute off the bench, as well.

LaPorte

Coach: Skeeter Heath

Coach’s record at school: 63-130

Coach’s career record: 209-313

2011-12 finish: 13-9, 7-7 DAC

Key losses: Kelsey Sule (9.4 ppg)

Key returnees: Jaclyn Heath (11.0 ppg, 7.4 apg), Taylor Thompson (7.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg), Delanie Alcorn, Kelsey Gushrowski

Outlook: LaPorte surrounded 3-point specialist Kelsey Rule with a bunch of sophomores last season and finished a respectable .500 in the DAC. The Slicers are led by coach Skeeter Heath’s daughter, Jaclyn. The point guard already holds the school record for career assists with 294 after dishing out 162 last season. She’s also fourth in school history in 3-point field goals. She’ll have a big front-line to work with in Kelsey Gushrowski, Taylor Thompson and Delanie Alcorn. Freshman Kyleigh Kubik should start right away and a pair of 6-foot freshmen should see considerable time also. The Slicers have a nice youth movement progressing that might pay off as early as this season.

Michigan City

Coach: Mike Megyese

Coach’s record at school: 52-19

Coach’s career record: 292-204

2011-12 finish: 18-7, 10-4 DAC

Key losses: None

Key returnees: Toni Murphy (19 ppg.); Keshyana Cooper (9.5 ppg., 14.2 rpg.); Michal Miller (13 ppg.); Jameka Collins (12 ppg., 7.5 rpg.)

Outlook: With 100 percent of their scoring and rebounding back, along with their top seven players, the Wolves expect to have a memorable season. Aubria Clifton returns from a serious knee injury, but hasn’t been cleared yet. The Wolves took No. 2 Penn to the wire last season in the Valparaiso Regional final before losing. “We have an opportunity to go as far as possible this year and we’re very excited,” coach Mike Megyese said. “I think our goals are very realistic, but we have a lot of tough teams in front of us. We’re the preseason (DAC) favorites and feel we should be the team to beat.”

Valparaiso

Coach: Jeanette Gray

Coach’s record at school: 25-40

Coach’s career record: 56-72

2011-12 finish: 5-16, 2-12 DAC

Key losses: Clarisse Fletcher (9 ppg)

Key returnees: Grace Withrow (10.1 ppg), Yasmin Carrillo (4.3 ppg)

Outlook: Whether the Vikings attain success or setbacks, they’ll be doing it with a lot of sophomores in the lineup, says head coach Jeanette Gray. While accepting the reality of some inconsistency, this group of the girls’ only coach has been Gray — which means they’re all familiar with expectations and should become an even more cohesive unit as the season progresses. Withrow and Carrillo bring the obvious experience, while Parker and Feczko saw varsity action as freshmen in the last three games of 2011.

Crown Point

Coach: Anne Equihua

Coach’s record at school: 14-9

Coach’s career record: 14-9

2011-12 finish: 14-9, 11-5 DAC

Key losses: Courtney Kvachkoff (15 ppg), Alexis Joseph (10 ppg, 10 rpg)

Key returnees: Taylor Equihua (5 ppg), Abby Kvachkoff

Outlook: Last year the Bulldogs finished third in the DAC and were a sectional runner-up. Unfortunately, two seniors and 35 points a game graduated from that team, leaving coach Anne Equihua with a much younger nucleus to work with this season. Taylor Equihua, who was injured midseason last year, will pick up some the slack. The rest will be carried by a young and enthusiastic team which will feature some freshmen. Among them is what Equihua calls a true point guard in Hannah Albercht — the younger sister of a clan of brothers who were CP athletic standouts.

Lake Central

Coach: Marc Urban

Coach’s record at school: 0-0

Coach’s career record: 0-0

2011-12 finish: 13-10, 7-7 DAC

Key losses: Nikki Adams

Key returnees: Jessica Bell, Lizzie Seymour

Outlook: There’s a new coach with a familiar name at LC. Marc Urban, son of former Highland girls basketball coach and athletic director Mike Urban, takes over and he has some talent coming back in post player Jessica Bell and point guard Lizzie Seymour. He will also have some energetic young players to push the veterans. “We have a good mix between experienced varsity players with a few sophomores who will step in,” he said. After winning a sectional title in 2011, the Indians lost to East Chicago in the final last season.

Merrillville

Coach: Amy Govert

Coach’s record at school: 122-36

Coach’s career record: 122-36

2011-12 finish: 21-1, 14-0 DAC

Key losses: Raveen Murray (19.8 ppg., 4.5 apg., 4.1 spg.); Jasmyne Miller (4.4 ppg.; 3.5 rpg.)

Key returnees: Victoria Gaines (15.8 ppg.; 7 rpg.); Dariyan Morris (10.7 ppg.); A.J. Downs (6.2 ppg.)

Outlook: The Pirates come off a memorable season, finishing unbeaten during the regular season and going 21-0 before being upset by Michigan City in the sectional semifinals. Talented Victoria Gaines, who suffered a horrific left knee injury and underwent surgery in April has been cleared to play. The Pirates lost point guard and leading scorer, Raveen Murray (now at Northeast Community College in Nebraska). Govert will look to seniors Dariyan Morris, Darian Patton and A.J. Downs to pick up the scoring slack. “We will continue to focus on defense this year to create easy scoring opportunities,” she said.
