Girls basketball: PCC outlook

Updated: December 6, 2012 6:08AM

Boone Grove

Coach: Candy Wilson

Coach’s record at school: 229-109

Coach’s career record: 229-109

2011-12 finish: 19-3, 7-0 PCC

Key losses: Brittany Shaffer, Emily Bobrowski, Julie Hogg

Key returnees: Claudia Cooper (4.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg), Paige Aguilera (5.6 ppg), Brittany Slicker (5.4 ppg), Faith Dammarell, Nicole Malouhos, Sarah Steinhilber

Outlook: The Wolves lost a talented group of seniors to graduation from last year’s team. But Wilson is excited about a talented young incoming group, coupled with the returning players who saw time last season. Boone might be a team that matures as the season progresses. Wilson was happy with a productive summer season. Her Wolves have won or shared the Porter County Conference round-robin title the last four seasons and should have another competitive campaign.

South Central

Coach: Rick Budka

Coach’s record at school: 33-50

Coach’s career record: 33-50

2011-12 finish: 8-13, 3-6 PCC

Key losses: Sydney Satoski

Key returnees: Jill Rosenbaum (16.5 PPG, 14.5 RPG), Rylee Nunemaker, Taylor Johnson

Outlook: Jill Rosenbaum is the star of the South Central show, and the junior will look to take even bigger strides after an impressive sophomore season. Rylee Nunemaker and Taylor Johnson are two quick guards that will wreak havoc on opposing backcourts this season — Nunemaker led the conference in steals last year. Budka had high praise for two freshmen: Morgan Wright, a guard with a great outside shot, and Riley Popplewell, who was an AAU standout in the past few seasons.

LaCrosse

Coach: Brian McMahan

Coach’s record at school: 6-34

Coach’s career record: 6-34

2011-12 finish: 4-16, 0-7 PCC

Key losses: Shelby Rushnok, Quinn Fox

Key returnees: Gabbie Sievers (7 ppg, 8 rpg), Taylor Guse, Jessica McDowell

Outlook: The Tigers have a good amount of experience returning in Taylor Guse, Sievers and Jessica McDowell, who have been starting since their sophomore years. Three others return who saw significant starting time last season. LaCrosse improved defensively last year, and coach Brian McMahan expects even more improvement this season. And numbers are up in the program, meaning better development of players at the lower levels. The key for LaCrosse will be scoring, and getting the ball to the players who can do the scoring.

Hebron

Coach: Stephanie Schulte

Coach’s record at school: 18-43

Coach’s career record: 18-43

2011-12 finish: 8-12, 4-3 PCC

Key losses: Christy Reick (9.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg)

Key returnees: Bre Lewin (8.7 ppg), Rylie Shrum (5.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg), Lauren Carlson (5.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg)

Outlook: The Hawks return four players from last year’s squad. The offseason provided role players and younger players with opportunities to fill in the void left from three-year starter Christy Reick. Coach Stephanie Schulte said the group works well together and are hungry for a successful season. They had a positive summer and many players have improved their individual games, which Schulte expects to translate to team success.

Hanover Central

Coach: Doug Nelson

Coach’s record at school: 68-61

Coach’s career record: 83-88

2011-12 finish: 13-8, 5-2 PCC

Key losses: None

Key returnees: Blayr Poston (17.4 ppg, 3.4 apg)

Outlook: Like in the last three years, Hanover’s offense revolves around Blayr Poston. But for the team to reach its goals — conference and sectionals titles top that list — others have to step up and take the load off Poston. Senior Rylie Singleton is one of them as she returns from knee surgery after averaging 8.6 points per game. Tiphani Ward and Kristen Roper are also key on a roster filled with experienced seniors and juniors. This will be the last season for the Wildcats in the PCC as they eventually move to the GSSC.

Washington Township

Coach: Becky Harper

Coach’s record at school: 8-32

Coach’s career record: 8-32

2011-12 finish: 7-13, 3-7 PCC

Key losses: Jenna Crosley

Key returnees: Heather Burton, Maddy Johnson, Sammie Higgins, Corie O’Connor, Natalee Kwiatkowski

Outlook: The Senators jumped from just one win in the 2010-11 campaign to a seven-win season last year and an experienced 2012-13 roster looks to raise that number even higher. The addition of talented freshman point guard Paige Reusch should also boost the Senators’ lineup. “Our goals have always been to try and win the PCC and then win a sectional,” Harper said. “Sooner or later I’d like to work on us going down state but right now it’s about getting better.”

Morgan Township

Coach: Kevin Krieger

Coach’s record at school: 48-59

Coach’s career record: 48-59

2011-12 finish: 13-11, 3-4 PCC

Key losses: Sammy Meschede (6.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg)

Key returnees: Trina Coleman (14.5 ppg, 4.4 apg, 4.1 spg, 3.6 rpg), Courtney Osby (6.6 ppg), Courtney Maxwell (4.4 rpg), Hannah Murphy, Katie Bachert, Alison Goetz

Outlook: The Cherokees are coming off winning a Class 1A sectional title, and they return all but one player from that team. Trina Coleman blossomed into one of the area’s best players last year, and she’s only a junior. She can handle the ball, shoot, drive and rebound. And she’s got a solid group around her. The scary thing about Morgan is it only has one senior on its roster this season (Osby). One flaw might be the team’s lack of height.

Kouts

Coach: Ron Kobza

Coach’s record at school: 64-25

Coach’s career record: 64-25

2011-12 finish: 14-9, 6-1 PCC

Key losses: Lexi Sippel (10.8 ppg), Jenna Jessen (11.5 ppg), Katie Parks (7.5 ppg), Sarah Clemens (4.2 ppg)

Key returnees: Jayla Crump (6.7 ppg), Allie Zimmerle (3.9 ppg), Megan Heinold

Outlook: The Fillies suffered several key graduation losses from last season. As a result, they return just two varsity players from a year ago (Jayla Crump and Allie Zimmerle). Zimmerle is the lone senior on the roster and will be a key leader. Crump had an impressive freshman season a year ago and figures to take on an important role as a scorer and slasher to the basket. Coach Ron Kobza, though, likes the enthusiasm he has seen from this team so far. And at Kouts, the program typical reloads instead of rebuilds.
