class 5A Regional
Fort Wayne Carroll (10-2)
at Merrillville (10-2), 7 p.m.
Radio: 1370-AM, 95.9-FM
The skinny: A quirk in the IHSAA football postseason schedule system has Merrillville playing its third straight home game, and that could be enough to edge Carroll, though the Chargers have as much momentum as the Pirates. Carroll has won five straight, including a 14-13 squeaker at Penn in the sectional semifinal. The Pirates will try to keep their high-powered offense rolling as the quarterback-receiver combo of Jake Raspopovich and Aaron Dye continues to put up big numbers. The Pirates are looking for their sixth regional title, the last coming in 2009.
Next: Winner of the Fishers at Fort Wayne Snider regional game. No matter who wins that game, Merrillville would be on the road for next week’s semistate.
Class 4A regional
Morton (7-5) at Mishawaka (9-3), 6:30 p.m.
Radio: 1230-AM, 88.5-FM
The skinny: Fresh off his 100th victory and fourth straight sectional title at Morton, Roydon Richards and his Governors will be looking for their second regional title in three years. In 2010, the regional victory was on the road at Concord, not that far from where they will be Friday night. Mishawaka also has just one regional title, in 1991. The Governors have been a running machine in the postseason, racking up 531 yards against Highland last week after more than 400 the week before against East Chicago.
Next: Winner of the Concord at Fort Wayne Dwenger regional game. No matter who wins that game, Morton would host next week’s semistate.
class 2a regional
Andrean (10-2) at Lewis Cass (11-1), 6:30 p.m.
The skinny: OK, so Andrean’s offense didn’t top the 60-point mark last week in a 28-21 win over Rensselaer in the sectional final. But that doesn’t mean Matt DeSomer, Trevor Berg, Zack Kogut and company still don’t have plenty of firepower to give Cass a run for its money. Cass has won eight straight after its only loss of the season coming in Week 4 at Class 3A No. 4 Hamilton Heights. Cass is looking for its fifth regional title — the last coming in 2008 — while Andrean is going for No. 6, but first since 2004 when the 59ers won the 3A state title.
Next: Winner of the Fort Wayne Luers at Tipton regional game. No matters who wins that game, Andrean would host next week’s semistate.
