H.S. football: Luers cruises to fourth straight title

INDIANAPOLIS — Fort Wayne Bishop Luers won its fourth consecutive 2A football championship with a 40-28 victory over Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter.
The Knights opened a 20-point lead in the second quarter then held off a fourth-quarter Raiders rally inside Lucas Oil Stadium.
Bishop Luers scored 27 straight points in the second quarter as Jaylon Smith rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns. He finished with 150 yards and three touchdowns.
Smith iced the game with a 16-yard touchdown run with 2:36 left in the game. Quarterback Quinn Cook threw for 87 yards and a touchdown.
Jake Purichia threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns for the Raiders. Jake Hagan was on the receiving end of all three scores and posted nine catches for 138 yards.
Cardinal Ritter entered the game a perfect 14-0 and had averaged 51 points per game, but Bishop Luers defense was dominant in the first half.
Schrader leads Lafayette Central to Class 1A title: Brad Schrader ran for 136 yards on 22 carries to help lead Lafayette Central Catholic to a 14-0 win over Indianapolis Scecina as the Knights captured their fourth Class 1A state football title.
Ty Preston threw for 121 yards on 5 of 9 passing Friday for the Knights.
Thomas Allgood rushed for 43 yards on seven carries and David Tarver ran for 43 yards on 12 for the Crusaders, who lost to the Knights in the finals for the second straight year. Scecina quarterback Robert Kennick threw for 23 yards on 3 of 10 passing.
The Knights’ Joe Smith scored on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Preston with 8:25 left in the third quarter for the first score.
The Knights shut out a team for the first time since 2009, when they beat Fountain Central, 52-0.
