Red Devils looking to
overcome injury issues
Lowell might be heading into this week’s Al Smith Invite at Mishawaka without wrestlers at 113 and 120 pounds due to injuries, but coach Bobby Howard hopes the wrestlers competing in the prestigious tournament will be enough to help Lowell finish among the top teams.
“Our goal is a top-five finish,” Howard said. “It’s lofty, but I think it’s achievable for us. This is an exciting time of year. In my opinion, it’s the best tournament in the state.”
Howard said he’s looking for Drew Hughes (14-1) at 120; Kenny Hughes (18-0) at 160 and Ryan Patterson (17-1) at 195, to continue performing well.
Other wrestlers Howard is counting on are Jake Gross at 126 and Alex Mavros at 152.

of the Week
Adam Garcia, Merrillville
The senior dropped down from 126 pounds to 120 at the Rich East Tournament last week and went unbeaten. The No. 1 seed received a first-round bye before going 3-0, including a pair of pins and a major decision, to help the Pirates win the team title.
