Streck continues to impress as freshman

Talk about a sense of urgency.

Merrillville heavyweight Shawn Streck has burst on the scene as one of the area’s most impressive first-year athletes.

In the Pirates’ 30-29 win over Duneland Conference rival Crown Point Wednesday night, Streck wanted his match with the Bulldogs’ Quentin Klingberg to be over almost before it started.

Suffering from some type of stomach illness, Streck asked Pirates’ coach Dave Maldonado if he could run to the restroom during a break.

“I told him: ‘No, you can’t go there right now. We need you to go back out there and get this pin,’’ Maldonado said.

Streck then stuck Klingberg 22 seconds into the second period — leaving no doubt where his next stop would be.
