HAMMOND — The top two teams in the Greater South Shore Conference needed overtime to decide the GSSC title. Bishop Noll won in exhilarating come-from-behind fashion, taking the 61-53 victory

Both the Oilers and Warriors came into Saturday’s contest with one loss and an unblemished GSSC record, and the regular-season conference title on the line.

The Oilers were on fire in the first half, outscoring Bishop Noll in both of the opening two quarters.

The Oilers led for the entire game until Bishop Noll evened the score at 50 with 54.5 seconds to play in regulation. The Warriors shot only 32 percent from the floor for thegame. Naomi House proved to be the spark needed in overtime as she converted two fast break layups to extend the lead. Noll outscored Whiting 11-3 in the extra session.

Both House and Brenda Pennington finished with 20 points on the night, while each added three steals to their stat lines.

“The second half seemed to slip away from us, but we were able to step up the pressure defensively by taking away the passing lanes and forcing them to do something with the ball,” Warriors head coach Crystal Del Real said.

Whiting was led by Brianna Blackwell, who finished with a team-high 21 points on 42 percent shooting from the floor. She drained three 3-point baskets, went 8-of-10 from the line and added four steals in the loss.

It’s Bishp Noll’s first GSSC title.

“This win shows our growth and the success of the season,” said Del Real, “This game showed my girls that maybe they do belong and they can do this. Tonight is a huge confidence boost.”
