Girls basketball: Wolves outlast shorthanded Hanover, keep PCC Kup

Updated: March 2, 2013 7:20AM

VALPARAISO — Down by 10 points late in the first quarter with the top scorer in Northwest Indiana behind the bench in street clothes, it looked like Hanover Central was bound to be blown out by host Boone Grove.

After all, the Porter County Conference Kup was on the line.

But Hanover scrapped and clawed and got help from some JV subs to make it a game until the end before Boone pulled off a 32-29 win.

“No comment,” said Hanover (11-7, 4-2 PCC) coach Doug Nelson on why Poston wasn’t playing.

Hanover was also missing starter Hannah Blue, who was out with the flu.

“We snuck that one out,” Boone Grove (14-6, 5-2) coach Candy Wilson said. “The kids never want to make it an easy game for me, I guess.”

Going into the fourth quarter, Hanover led 29-27 after building as much as a six-point lead early in the third quarter. But Boone’s defense clamped down in the last eight minutes, holding the Wildcats scoreless.

Hanover was already offensively challenged without Blue and Poston.

“We have to have someone step up and make a play,” Nelson said. “I thought Kristen (Roper) was the best player on the floor for us tonight … when we got her the ball. Just get her the darn ball. When you’re playing that team, you need to shoot the ball. We were moving east-west when we needed to move north-south.”

The saving grace for Boone was senior Paige Aguilera, who led the way with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three kicked balls on defense. After the game, she put a little scare into fans and teammates when she passed out. But she said it was just being overheated.

“I was super, super hot,” she said. “We needed to keep calm (in the second half) and stop freaking out. We didn’t want to lose the Kup after we just got it from them.”

Roper led Hanover with 13 points and nine rebounds, while 6-foot-3 freshman Lisa Gac had eight rebounds and seven blocked shots as a disruption in the middle.
