sectional outlook
Chesterton sectional
Teams: Calumet, Chesterton, Hobart, Knox, LaPorte, Merrillville, Michigan City, North Judson, Portage, South Central, Valparaiso, Wheeler.
When: 5:30 p.m. Thursday (prelims);
9 a.m. Saturday (finals)
Where: Chesterton Natatorium
Three athletes of interest: Chesterton senior Julia Campbell (200 and 500 free), LaPorte senior Carly Jackson (multiple events, including distance swims) and Valparaiso senior Khalela El-Naggar (diver).
The Skinny: Depth, tradition, and a history of dominance all bode well for the defending champion hosts. The Trojans lost an elite swimmer in Olivia Kabacinski to graduation, but they responded this season by winning in each of their duals and invites. While keeping up with Chesterton is a tall order, LaPorte, Valparaiso and Wheeler are all teams looking to again advance swimmers to IUPUI for state.
Next up: The state meet on the campus of IUPUI, starting with the prelims on Feb. 8.
Munster Sectional
Team: Crown Point, East Chicago, Griffith, Hammond, Clark, Gavit, Morton, Bishop Noll, Highland, Kankakee Valley, Lake Central, Lowell, Munster, North Newton, Rensselaer, South Newton.
When: 5:30 p.m. Thursday (prelims);
9 a.m. Saturday (finals)
Where: Munster Natatorium
Three athletes of interest: Crown Point sophomore Aly Tetzloff (200 free and 100 fly), Lake Central junior Traci Muszalski (200 free and 500 free), Munster junior Mary Beth Blocher (50 and 100 free)
Skinny: Nothing is going to come easy in one of the most competitive sectionals in the state. Though the defending champion Seahorses are still the team to beat, Lake Central’s comparable depth (as exhibited in its upset win over Munster at the Highland Invite) could make for an interesting finish. Not to mention, Crown Point — a team laden with front-end talent — is hungry to advance in as many events as possible.

Next up: The State Tournament on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, starting with the prelims on February 8.
Munster
Team: Crown Point, East Chicago, Griffith, Hammond, Clark, Gavit, Morton, Bishop Noll, Highland, Kankakee Valley, Lake Central, Lowell, Munster, North Newton, Rensselaer, South Newton.
When: Thursday (Prelims) 5:30 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.

Skinny: Nothing is going to come easy in one of the most competitive and naill-biting sectionals in the Hoosier-land. Though the defending champion Seahorses are still the team to beat, Lake Central’s comparable depth (as exhibited in their upset win over Munster at the Highland Invite) is sure to make for a tricky finish. Not to mention, Crown Point — the region’s most front-end laden program — is hungry to advance as many events as possible down to the big show.
