Girls swimming: Chesterton cruises in prelims

CHESTERTON — As expected, host Chesterton dominated at the girls swimming sectional preliminaries, advancing all its swimmers to the finals on Saturday.

Chesterton grabbed the first seed in eight of 10 events, but did not quite swim the way its coach would have liked.

“I thought we were flat and I sensed that they were here more to qualify than to compete,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “But these girls are focused and will come here Saturday with a different look on matters knowing they will be facing some solid performers from the other schools here today.”

One of the more impressive performers for Chesterton was Vanessa Krause, who took the first seed in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly, and as a member of the 200-yard medley relay. Krause was spectacular in the 100 butterfly, setting a sectional record with a time of 56.25.

“I am happy with the record and came out looking to swim the best that I can,” Krause said. “I don’t typically hold back and tonight I came in looking for a good time and got it.”

South Central got a solid representation from its lone swimmer, Victoria Klimczak, who captured the top seed in the 100-yard freestyle and the third seed in the 50-yard freestyle.

Hobart’s Kaylee Gubricky captured the top seed in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.76 in the only other event not captured by Chesterton.

Chesterton is looking for a 14th consecutive sectional title on Saturday and knows that the mood will be different at the final.

“We are excited for the finals and I know we will be a lot more focused and excited on Saturday,” Krause said. “This has been a great experience for me being a part of this team and cheering on each other as a team.”
