GRIFFITH — Griffith, the team that has won four straight sectional championships, makes it to the sectional final again this year and will play a sub-.500 team Saturday night. And the Panthers held that final opponent to 19 points in their regular-season duel.
But don’t tell Griffith coach Tom Golumbeck the title is a foregone conclusion.
“If you saw us play in the first half against Wallace then you know that anyone can win this sectional,” Golumbeck said of Friday’s semifinal.
The second half was a different story as the Panthers used a Sammi Adams-led third-quarter run while holding Wallace to six second-half points in their 37-18 win.
Next up for Griffith (14-8) is a matchup with Gavit, a 49-30 winner over Clark in the other semifinal game.
What punctuated the Panthers’ semifinal win was a 14-0 third-quarter run with Adams scoring the first four points and five of the 14. The run gave Griffith a 28-14 lead after three.
“At the beginning we were jittery and were excited to play this game,” said Adams, who has won a sectional title in each of her first three seasons with Griffith. “But we played better when we settled down in the second half and we ran our offense better.”
Wallace (11-6) got a six-point performance from Jessica Cunningham.
Gavit went the opposite route in its win, jumping out to a 20-8 lead after one quarter, coming up just short of picking up as many points in one quarter as the Gladiators did in their entire 26-21 win over Hammond Wednesday night.
In winning the rubber match between the two teams, Breona Muller had a game-high 12 points while Sheila Morris-Rogers and Shanika Thornton added 10 points each for the Gladiators(9-13).
Clark (7-14) got 12 from Dulce Garcia.
