Girls basketball: Rensselaer knocks off Hanover, wins first 3A title

Updated: March 11, 2013 6:58AM

CEDAR LAKE — Rensselaer’s Emilie Ziese wanted this win and the senior contributed in a big way aiding the Bombers to their first Class 3A sectional title, defeating Hanover Central 43-40.

“We wanted this win in a big way,” Ziese said. “We knew we had to hit the boards hard and try and contain a great player in Blayr Poston and we were able to do that and it’s a great feeling to win.”

Ziese was pivotal in Rensselaer’s success as the senior dominated play in the middle, scoring a game-high 21 points to go along with 17 rebounds and six block shots.

Both teams traded baskets early but Rensselaer worked the ball into Ziese and grabbed the lead at 9-6 after the first quarter.

Rensselaer (16-7) continued working the ball in to Ziese and extended its lead to as much as 10, while holding Poston scoreless in the first half.

Poston found her groove in the second half and Hanover mounted a solid comeback, cutting the Rensselaer lead to 30-25 at the end of three quarters.

Hanover Central stormed back, riding Poston’s hot hand as the senior scored 11 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter to take the lead, but Rensselaer answered back with Ziese.

The game came down to the final seconds as Rensselaer was ahead by one when Ziese made two clutch free throws to seal the win.

“We seemed to try to give it away late in the second half, but our girls maintained their focus, fending off a tough Hanover Central team that never quit,” said Rensselaer coach Jeff Marlow. “Our girls stuck to our game plan and we are happy with the win.”

Hanover Central (14-8) suffered the loss, ending the career of Poston as the all-time leading scorer in school history.

“It’s a tough loss and it’s hard to say good-bye to the seniors on this team, especially No. 11 (Poston), but they played hard to the end and I am proud of their effort tonight,” Hanover Central coach Doug Nelson said.

Rensselaer advances to the Rensselaer Regional to face Benton Central on Saturday in the early game.
