CROWN POINT — Munster and Highland are neighbors and longtime rivals, but you can’t get much closer than their finish Thursday night in the Crown Point Sectional preliminaries.
Both teams had five first-place finishes and go into the finals on Saturday boasting No. 1 seeds in five events each.
“Yeah, we expected it to be highly competitive,” Munster coach Matt Pavlovich said. “Crown Point is tough, Bishop Noll looked good and Rensselaer had a couple of spots. We’re a young team, we’ll see how we’ll respond on Saturday, but I’m really pleased with today.”
Munster’s 200 medley relay team of Jeremy Gonzalez, James Beckham, Logan Armagast and Joseph Gardner had a winning time of 1:39.26.
Beckham had first-place finishes in the 100 fly with a time of 53.46 and the 100 back with a time of 55.06, and Gardner took top honors in the 100 breast with a 1:01.19 and the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.15.
Trojans senior Stephen Castillo had his hand in four of Highland’s five first-place finishes.
“Yeah, I figured I’d go out and try to get as many No. 1 spots as I could, but tonight was a total team effort and I feel really good about that.”
Castillo had winning times of 21.31 in the 50 free and 46.25 in the 100 free. He also helped his team win the 200 and 400 free relay.
Matthew Harnisch, Samuel Gordon and Jeffery Schroeder had a winning time of 1:30.73 in the 200 free relay and Castillo, Christopher Dabrowski, Gordon and Schroeder took top honors with a winning time of 3:21.57 in the 400 free relay.
“We swam well tonight,” said Trojans coach Ryan Harrington. “Tonight we swam to get as many No. 1 seeds as we could and that means a lot to the kids. Saturday will be tough with Lake Central, Crown Point and Munster, obviously.”
Dabrowski also took first in the 500 free with a winning time of 4:54.99 and Crown Point freshman Joey Karczewski had a first place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.65.
