LAFAYETTE — For just the second time in the 14-year history of the Indiana High School Bowling state finals, two Northwest Indiana teams hoisted trophies. First, it was Boone Grove taking the girls title in an all-NWI championship, edging Lake Central 315-304. In the boys final, the Lake Central eased the pain a little with an even closer victory, 422-420, over Franklin Central in the final.
It came down to the 10th frame and one ball in both matches. LC’s Kelly Belzeski left a washout (1-2-4-10) in the 10th frame, and if she had picked it up, the Indians could have came back against Boone. LC boys anchor Nate Maciejewski left a 3-6 on his second ball in the 10th frame, and needed to get one of them to win. He got two with a pure pickup.
It’s the first state title for both the LC boys and Boone girls after both had made it to the state finals but fell short in recent years.
Earlier in the day, the region also had its first singles state title in a close final that was a precursor of things to come. Merrillville’s Carly Larson struck on her last ball to edge Homestead’s Sydney Brummett 235-234.
The other time two NWI teams won state titles was 2007 when the Griffith boys and Lake Central girls hoisted trophies.
