FULTON — A young Morgan Township team faced off against equally young Oregon-Davis in a semifinal at the Class 1A Caston Regional, on Saturday. The Bobcats won 61-39.
Despite the loss, there were a lot of positives in Cherokees coach Kevin Krieger’s mind after the game.
“We didn’t get off to a slow start, O-D got off to a fast one,” Kreiger said of the Bobcats’ 9-0 opening run.
“We played them even the middle part of the game, we played them even, or even beat them for much of that time” Krieger said. “Take away the first four minutes, we won the first half.”
Unfortunately for the Cherokees, O-D led 22-9 at the end of the first quarter, and were up 33-16 at the half. In the third quarter, the Cherokees outscored the Bobcats 16-12, but it was too late to help the Cherokees get back into the game.
Trina Coleman led the Cherokees (14-11) with 18 points and five rebounds. Often, she was the motor that kept Morgan going. Paige Moore added five rebounds and two steals and Hannah Murphy added eight points.
Alicia McIntosh scored 13 for O-D, and Ashley Campbell and Jesse Averone each scored 11 for the Bobcats.
