ROCHESTER — Boone Grove learned its lesson well the first time it played Whiting.
Extend the pressure against their guards, beat up the Oilers, who lack a real big player inside, and make sure the peaks are higher than the valleys.
The Wolves, racing out to a 13-point first-quarter lead, clubbed Whiting 52-33 in a semifinal at the Class 2A Rochester Regional on Saturday. It was the first time since 2003 that Boone Grove had advanced to the regional championship game. The Wolves played Fort Wayne Luers on Saturday night for the title. Whiting beat the Wolves 61-55 in overtime in the regular season.
It was a fairly easy win for the Wolves, though there were a few nervous moments, most of them coming in the second quarter when the Oilers cut a 13-point lead to six.
The halftime break rejuvenated Boone Grove. The Wolves outscored Whiting 18-4 in the third quarter.
Candy Wilson, the Wolves coach, was able to breathe easier after the third-quarter takedown.
“We always seem to have one ugly quarter,” she said. “I told them that was their ugly quarter.”
Boone Grove got back to pushing the Oilers’ perimeter offense out further than it was clearly comfortable with.
They also closed out the lanes for Citali Lopez. Lopez, who finished with 20 points, only made one free throw in the quarter.
Whiting coach Kevin Moynihan said his team never really clicked.
“We didn’t play with the same kind of passion and energy that we had last week,” he said. “I don’t know why. We had a good week of practice.”
The Wolves never trailed.
Boone Grove scored the first 15 points of the game, getting its last basket in the first quarter from Paige Aguilera with 23 seconds left.
The Oilers finally broke the drought when Lopez hit a little runner with time running out in the quarter.
Whiting picked up the pace and the pressure in the second quarter to get back into the game.
Lopez hit a 3-pointer with 6:24 left in the half to pull them within 12 at 17-5. They cut the lead to ten points on another basket by Lopez. That caused Wilson to use her first time-out.
Didn’t help that much as the Oilers went on a 9-4 through the half and cut the lead to six at half-time. Boone Grove finished off the Oilers with an 18-4 third quarter run.
