INDIANAPOLIS — Chesterton’s quest for its third state swimming championship is in good shape after Friday’s preliminaries at IUPUI. The top-ranked Trojans captured the top seed in seven of Friday’s 11 events, setting meet records in three of those victories.

“We had a spectacular night,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “Three meet records and just missed a fourth by a tenth of a second. We’ve got ourselves in good position for tomorrow’s finals.”

Chesterton’s most notable individual performance came from Aaron Whitaker, who set meet records in both the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly. Whitaker blew away the old backstroke record by more than a second with a time of 47.37. The junior’s butterfly time of 47.84 just got under his older brother Kyle’s previous record of 47.85, set in 2009.

“(Aaron) had a great summer,” said Kinel. “He swam in the Olympic trials and he’s been swimming great all year for us.”

The Trojans’ Blake Pieroni earned the top seed in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle, in which Pieroni is the defending state champ. A third Whitaker brother, Ethan, also finished with the top seed in the 200 freestyle and is seeded second in the 500 freestyle.

Chesterton’s 400 freestyle relay team set the third Trojans record of the evening, besting the old mark by more than two seconds. Both of the Whitakers, Pieroni and Patrick Curley swam legs on the relay. The Trojans’ 200 medley relay team also finished with a top seed and its 200 freestyle relay team qualified as the sixth seed for the finals.

Valparaiso’s Andrew Antonetti grabbed the third seed in the 200 freestyle and the eighth seed in the 500 freestyle. Munster’s James Beckman will be seeded seventh in the 100 backstrokes and Michigan City’s Matt Quinlan is seeded sixth in the 100 breaststroke. Chesterton’s Jack Waller is seeded eighth in the 100 breaststroke and Highland’s Stephen Castillo reached the consolation round in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.
