KOUTS — Washington Township had its sights set on coming out fast and setting the tone early in the opening game of the Kouts Sectional and they did just that with an impressive 83-40 win over Covenant Christian to advance to the semifinal on Friday.

With the victory, the Senators set a school-record with 15 wins in a season and showed their focus moving on to the next round.

“We came out early and used the press to set the tone defensively and were able to capitalize on turnovers for easy baskets, we wanted to come out and set the tone early and we did — our kids showed that they will play 32 minutes of basketball,” said Washington Township coach Scott Bowersock.

Washington came out the aggressor on a 13-0 run to grab the lead for good on the hot-shooting of Ryan Geberin. The Senators lead 25-6 after the first quarter.

Washington kept up the offensive flurry through the second quarter as they shot 55 percent from the field.

The Senators defense caused fits for Covenant throughout the first half as the Knights committed a total of 17 turnovers giving Washington a comfortable 47-15 lead at halftime.

Covenant Christian’s offense came to life in the third quarter, but Washington answered back and coasted to the victory.

“It’s a big win for us setting the school record and coming into the sectionals and getting the first win under our belts,” Geberin said. “It was a team effort and I was able to score thanks to the effort of my teammates.”

Washington Township (15-6) advances to Friday’s first semifinal contest to face off against fellow PCC school LaCrosse. Covenant Christian (4-17), ends its season led by the scoring of Caleb Herrema with 15 points.
