Gymnastics: All-Area Team

First Team

Mackenzie Barcelli

Portage senior

By the numbers: First place in floor (9.675) and all-around (38.325) at the state finals

Raves: Barcelli was the Indians’ anchor all year long and that decision never looked better than it did at the conclusion of the state finals.

Morgan Algozine

Valparaiso senior

By the numbers: First oin vault (9.875) and bars (9.7) at the state finals

Raves: Two more state championships in her final competition gave Algozine six for her career, tying her for the fourth-most in state history. Another name added to a long list of outstanding Valparaiso gymnasts.

Kylee Maxwell

Morgan Township freshman

By the numbers: Fifth on vault (9.725) and tied for fifth in all-around (37.15) at the state finals

Raves: A podium finish in her first high school season signals a very bright future for the lone representative of the Cherokees’ gymnastics program.

Danielle Solis

Portage junior

By the numbers: Second on vault (9.85) and third on floor (9.6) at the state finals

Raves: This is Solis’ second straight year on the first team, as she again proved to be a reliable performer for Portage. Her vault at the state finals helped spur Portage’s comeback.

Second Team

Hannah Erwin

Valparaiso senior

By the numbers: Tenth in all-around (36.725) at the state finals and third on bars (9.55) at regionals

Raves: A consistent performer all season long that will leave another sizeable hole in the Valparaiso lineup for next season.

Madison Kurtz

Portage sophomore

By the numbers: Seventh in all-around (37.025), fifth on bars (9.5) and tied for sixth on vault (9.7) at the state finals

Raves: Completed the trio of Portage gymnasts that led the Indians to a state championship. She and Solis will be counted on even more next season.

Lia Milroy

Valparaiso freshman

By the numbers: Fourth on bars (9.6) at the state finals, seventh on beam (9.3) at regionals

Raves: Milroy was a clutch performer during the Vikings’ postseason run and figures to be a more prominent fixture in the Valparaiso lineup in the future.

Hannah Best

Crown Point freshmanBy the numbers:

Fifth on floor (9.45) at the state finals

Raves: Best was a talented all-around performer in her rookie high school season, but she made the most of her one event at the state finals.
