Baseball: Nick Marlow delivers in Munster’s win over KV

MUNSTER — The loudest bats came off the bench in Munster’s 7-6 victory over Kankakee Valley. And none were louder than the Mustangs’ Nick Marlow, who delivered the game-ending RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“He’s been hot with the bat lately,” said Munster coach Bob Shinkan. “We tried to have him get a couple of bunts down there at first, but it worked out in the end.”

Marlow’s game-winner scored Alex Coccia from first base and it came with a bit of controversy as there was some question as to whether Marlow substituted in properly. The home plate umpire didn’t have a record of the substitution and the KV coaching staff felt that Marlow should have been ruled out.

“The pinch-hitter didn’t report in and should have been called out when he reached first base,” said Kougars’ coach Doug Greenlee. “But Munster doesn’t see it that way.”

Coccia had also come off the bench when starter Allan Korem took a ball off the wrist during the game’s first at-bat. Coccia reached base in all four of his plate appearances with two hits and two runs scored, including the game-winner.

“That’s just Alex, that’s what he’s been doing,” said Shinkan. “He just gets on base and makes things happen.”

The biggest splash from a sub came on Kankakee Valley’s pinch-hit grand slam in the fifth inning from Matt Myers. A walk and two hit batsmen loaded the bases for Myers, who belted a line drive over the left field wall. The blast tied the score at 5-5 after Munster had taken a lead by scoring four runs in the fourth inning.

“Matt’s normally a starter, but he turned his ankle and the trainer said we should rest him today,” said Greenlee. “He had been in a bit of a slump, but so was our other starter today.”

Sean McCarthy (4-1) got the win for Munster (11-5, 5-2). Matt Berdine took the loss for the Kougars (6-10, 1-8). The two meet up again at Kankakee Valley Tuesday as Greenlee tries again for win number 500.
