Whiting pulls away from Wheeler

VALPARAISO — In an annually hyped-up Greater South Shore Conference matchup, Whiting and Wheeler were engaged in a back-and-forth contest again Friday night.

The Oilers came away with the victory over the Bearcats, 43-21.

“We have to keep going one game at a time. This is big, and we are controlling our own destiny,” Whiting coach Jeff Cain said.

The scoring opened with a host of Oilers defenders sacking Wheeler quarterback Alex Ruesta in his own end zone for a safety.

Whiting took its ensuing possession down for a touchdown, an 8-yard strike from A.J Veloz to Matt Ramirez. After that the scoring went back and forth for the remainder of the first half.

Wheeler got on the board on an 82-yard touchdown run by Jacob Wasz. The Oilers answered with a 6-yard score on the ground from Ethan Young. The Bearcats took advantage of the big play as they recorded a 48-yard touchdown reception by Clayton Thorn from Ruesta to pull within two at 16-14.

That would have remained the score heading into the locker room if not for two costly penalties on the Wheeler defense, which allowed Veloz to find Keegan Rooke for a 15-yard score with 7.5 seconds remaining in the second quarter to make it 23-14.

The Bearcats defense came up with a three-and-out to begin the third. Ruesta completed a beautiful throw to clay Turpin on their next drive to get within two again at 23-21. But that was the last time Wheeler scored.

Whiting got a couple 1- yard touchdown runs from Veloz and Jesse Maynard to take a 37-21 lead. Maynard scored again in the closing minutes of the fourth from 8 yards out to complete the scoring.

Oilers running back Ethan young had a tremendous performance running for 200 yards on 25 carries, much of it coming on a 67-yard dash to set up a Maynard TD.
