Vikings head south for State Preview

If the Vikings have it their way, Saturday won’t be their only trip to Terre Haute this fall, as the Valparaiso cross country team headed south to compete in the State Preview Meet.

Valparaiso’s squad took second overall with a team score of 86, finishing in second place to defending state champion Carmel, which finished with an impressive 36 points. Senior Corey Alfredson led the Vikings across the finish line in 11th place with a time of 16:30.

Rounding out the Vikings’ to five were: Ari Coulopoulos (16:38, 15th), Andrew Jankowski (16:48, 21st), Danny Dalton (16:49, 23rd) and Kevin Hickey (16:52, 27th).

Runner of the Week

Brian Blaylock, Sr., Lowell

The Red Devils’ No. 1 runner scored an early-season victory with a first-place finish in a dual meet with Munster at Oak Ridge Prairie, posting a time of 16:21 to lead the pack.

LC freshman duo getting job done

Lake Central has a pair of fabulous freshmen in Sarah Hunsley and Sara Ramos. The talented duo finished No. 2 and No. 5 at last weekend’s inaugural Rudy Skorupa Invitational.

“I expect them to do well in every meet, because they work hard every day,’’ LC assistant coach Karen Arehart said. “They stay in that lead group with Megan (Zajac), Josie (Polaski) and Jade (Tazbir) in practice.’’

Lancioni turned in a time of 19:20, helping the Slicers earn wins over Portage (26-29) and Michigan City (15-48) in a meet at Woodland Park on Tuesday.
