Girls volleyball: Noll pulls upset to reach semistate final

Updated: November 2, 2013 11:00PM

BREMEN — Bishop Noll went into the Bremen Semistate as an underdog. And that bulldog spirit the Warriors brought with them to the semifinal match helped carry them to a convincing 3-0 upset victory over Madison-Grant.

And the Warriors did it with style, controlling the tempo as they led virtually the entire way in the first two games, 25-23 and 25-21, then fought off the Argyllls with a come-from-behind win, 25-23.

“We’re just playing with abandon,” Noll coach David Rodriguez said. “We got here by being aggressive, and we’ll continue doing that tonight (in the title match).”

The first to games were all Noll, though Madison-Grant did take a lead miday into the second game before the Warriors fought the Argylls off.

The third game was a different story. The Argylls were in it all the way, and even led 22-18 before Noll came back.

Junior Carlie Capputo was the major catalyst for the Warriors, leading the team with 19 kills. She was at the service line went Noll took over the match. She drilled an ace to make it 23-21 Argylls with an ace, then continued serving as Noll went back in the lead 24-23 on a Capputo kill, and her team clinched the game.

“We were underestimated,” Capputo said. And when the final game was on the line, “Coach said, ‘find Carlie.’ That really stoked my confidence.”
