Boys basketball: Gavit beats Clark; Lew Wallace rallies to beat Roosevelt

Updated: April 6, 2014 6:39AM

Hammond — The Hammond Civic Center played host to the 3A Sectional 17 openers Tuesday night. The first game of the evening showcased Gavit against Clark.

The game began with a shaky start as each team struggled to find its rhythm. Gavit (6-15) came away with a 46-34 victory over the winless Pioneers (0-22). The Gladiators finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run after trailing in the early going. Gavit did not lose the lead for the remainder of the game.

Senior forward Eric Sims played well for the Gladiators, finishing with 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting. Jarren Thomas made 3-of-7 3-pointers in the victory.

The second game of the night between Lew Wallace (10-7) and Roosevelt (10-8) proved to be much more competitive, as the Hornets came from behind to win 71-69.

The Panthers held the lead from halftime until under three minutes left in the game. The Hornets played their game, and were able to capitalize on Roosevelt’s missed shots and inability to get to the free-throw line.

“Our turnovers really killed us. It wasn’t until the last three or four minutes where we took care of the ball,” Lew Wallace head coach Brandon Scott said. “I felt that if we at least took care of the ball we’d have a shot at it.”

Lew Wallace’s Aarion Green played a terrific game, finishing with 11 points. Green ran the offense with a senior’s proficiency, particularly when the team was out on the break.

Keontae Bridges led all scorers with 24 points, none bigger than the two free-throws with fewer than 30 seconds to play. Roosevelt’s LaDontaz Tolbert hit a 3-pointer as the clock expired, but thanks to Bridges’s free throw the game was out of reach.

Gavit will play Lew Wallace in round two of Sectional 17.
