ST. JOHN — Lake Central standout Glenn Robinson III started to laugh while standing at the free-throw line early in the second quarter.

Robinson was getting a kick out of what a large contingent of Crown Point fans were chanting.

“Over-rated. Over-rated. Over-rated.”

When Robinson’s first free throw rimmed out, the CP fans repeated their chant even more vociferously.

Those same CP fans then took their chant to a more personal level as they started screaming: “Daddy’s better. Daddy’s better. Daddy’s better.”

The chants might not have had anything to do with the eventual outcome — Lake Central rolled to a decisive 74-54 Duneland Athletic Conference win over the Bulldogs (4-7, 3-5) — but they sure lit a fire under Robinson.

Robinson not only swished the second free throw, but drained a 3-point basket and hit a variety of spinning shots in the lane, along with two more free throws, before missing a long desperation shot as the first half ended with his Indians (11-2, 7-1) holding a commanding 43-29 lead.

Robinson scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the second quarter when he hit all his shots with the exception of that first free throw and the desperation jumper.

“I kind of laughed it off (hearing those chants),’’ smiled Robinson, who scored 18 points in the first half and also ended up with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.

“I’ve heard it so many times. It did give me motivation to do what I wanted to do. It gave me the fire inside of me to go out and do all that I could do to help my team. It definitely gave me some adrenaline.’’

The funny thing about the second chant: “Daddy’s better. Daddy’s better, etc., is this: “How do they know ‘Daddy’s better,’ ” Robinson laughed. “They don’t know that yet. We won’t know that until later.’’

Robinson wasn’t the only player who had a big game for LC as coach Dave Milausnic’s team placed three other players in double figures.

Tyler Wideman and Tye Wilburn each scored 11 points and Mike Miklusak had 10 — all in the first half. Wideman also had seven rebounds and blocked two shots.

“I just thought we played very well defensively and offensively,’’

Robinson said. “We ran the floor well and got some stops. I thought we played a pretty good game all-around.’’

So did Milausnic.

Lake Central shot 66.7 percent (14 of 21) from the floor in the first half compared to 40 for CP. The Indians finished the game at 52.3 percent compared to 45 for the Dogs.

“It’s a nice win for us,’’ Milausnic said. “I have a lot of respect for Clint (CP coach Swan). I thought Glenn did a nice job of playing under control and being efficient tonight. He had some nice takes to the hole and got to the line.’’

Bulldogs coach Clint Swan didn’t like the way the game went after the first quarter.

“The middle two quarters they were really good and we were really bad,’’ Swan said. “I thought the first half we ran a really good offense. We were able to get into the lane, but they really extended us. They really forced us out of what we wanted to do the first half.’’

Zach Plesac led CP with 14 points, while Tom Bardeson and Alex Nickla each scored nine.
