Local South Suburban gymnasts shine in Indy

South Suburban Sports Complex’s gymnastics club based in Crete, Ill. did very well in the Circle of Stars meet on Jan. 20-22 in Indianapolis with multiple Northwest Indiana girls shining.

Level 5 gymnast Skylar Gibbs placed fifth on the vault and fifth all-around, while Maddy Andrews placed third on floor and fifth on vault in Level 8.

In Level 9, Malena Hernandez placed third on vault, fourth on bars, floor and beam and third all-around. Brooke Hiestand stood out the most with first on floor and vault, and second all-around.

CP Babe Ruth sign-ups: With such a mild winter, area youth baseball clubs are thinking of summer breezes — and filling their 2012 rosters.

Crown Point’s Babe Ruth Baseball organization is hosting sign-ups from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the CP Babe Ruth field. Interested boys ages 16-18 from Lake, Porter, LaPorte and Newton counties are invited to register. The cost is $190 per player, which includes $25 in raffle tickets. Nitroz 15U baseball sign-ups: The Indiana Nitroz 15U travel baseball team is looking for seasoned players to add to their 2012 roster. The region-based team is expected to play competitive college showcase tournaments throughout the area. For more details, call Jay Mummey at 644-5891.

Steelheads baseball needs players: The 12U Southshore Steelheads elite travel baseball team out of Hobart is looking for two players to complete their 2012 roster. Travel experience is preferred. Interested players must contact Dave Cooper regarding a tryout at 545-1422 or coop_365@msn.com.

Mystique soccer camps: FC Mystique Inc. announced its Mystique girls soccer and Wizards boys soccer camps, which start March 1.

Ages 5-12 can participate in seven, one-and-a-half hour training sessions from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the South Haven Christian School gym (786 Juniper Road, Valparaiso). Licensed, professional training is available for the camps, which have limited openings available. Registration deadline is Feb. 27.

Valentine’s 5K event: The unofficial start of the Northwest Indiana running season arrives on Sunday with the annual Valentine’s 5K Run starting and ending at Valparaiso High School.
