SCHERERVILLE — The lap times were telling him that he was going to catch his prey. But a yellow flag sure made it easier.
Eddie Hoffman, trailing Paul Shafer Jr., by several car-lengths with just 11 laps remaining in the late-model feature Saturday night at the ASA-sanctioned Illiana Speedway, caught a big break when the race was halted after Garrett Goodwin smacked the backstretch wall and was going slow as he exited the track.
On the restart, Hoffman used the outside to blast by Shafer to capture his sixth victory of the season by 0.471 seconds over Erik Darnell.
Mike White had another strong run in his No. 14, claiming third place ahead of Shafer, D.J. Weltmeyer and Mark Sontag Jr.
Bill Serviss took the lead from Bobbie Jean Wall just six laps from the finish to capture the turbo stox feature. Wall, with Serviss on her back bumper, tracked down and passed Bobby Blood to take the lead on lap 11. She held off Serviss until drifting up high in Turn 3, allowing Serviss to sneak underneath and make the pass.
Serviss took Chris Woodall with him, but Wall was able to slip down into third place, and keep it despite heavy pressure from Jacob McKown.
Fast qualifier and points leader Alex Arelano needed just 10 laps to get to the front and capture the Legends feature. Arelano passed heat winner Matt O’Leary in Turn 4. O’Leary held on for second, ahead of Jacob Melvin and Paul Shafer Sr.
Stan Zolods won his seventh feature of the season in the bandolero division, defeating Ken Myer and Cole Sutton. In the pure stocks, Mark Ross Jr. bested a large field of competitors that included runnerup Michael Gerike and third-place Alex Treptow.
