P-T Tennis Classic: Paige, Penny Heuer reach doubles final

VALPARAISO — Munster’s Paige Heuer was a little bummed about her loss to IUPUI freshman-to-be Bobbi Modesto in the Post-Tribune Tennis Classic at Valparaiso University on Saturday afternoon.

But it wasn’t anything Mom couldn’t fix.

Paige and Penny Heuer teamed up in the doubles open tournament semifinals and knocked off Emily and Jamie Claeys, 6-4, 6-0 to reach the championship match.

Paige was disappointed she didn’t reach the singles open title match after losing to Modesto, 6-0, 6-2, but was happy to get a chance to redeem herself and play with her mom.

“I was a little frustrated after that (loss to Modesto),” Paige said. “And I was a little tired having just played but (Mom) kept me up when I was getting mad in that first set. Once we won that first set, though, I thought we gained some confidence and it was fun from there.”

Penny Heuer said her daughter’s service game was strong in the victory.

“It felt good when Paige was serving because I can take over the net,” mom said. “And her return game was very strong when I was struggling out there a little bit.”

Looking ahead: Bobbi Modesto, who won the 18-and-under singles title over sister, Meg, on Wednesday, is looking for her first open division singles title match. The future IUPUI tennis standout faces Katee Sanderson at 9 a.m. for the crown. Sanderson knocked off Jamie Claeys, 6-3, 6-2 to reach her first open title match.

Molly Sanderson and Bryce Bonin won their third mixed open doubles match of the tournament Saturday with an upset win over Phil and Holly Santaguida. The two eighth-graders-to-be will face a more experienced Kevin Spudic and Mitzi Lamy in the finals at noon today.

In the 65-and-under singles championship, Rufus Morgan will face Gary Dlough at 11 a.m.
